Mission Statement
The Mission of Among Friends is to provide a safe and friendly place for adults with disabilities to have fun, learn, and develop friendships, offering opportunities and hope for a better life.
About This Cause
Among Friends, since 2003, continues to provide an activity center for disabled adults to come each day for a variety of social activities and programs aimed at improving and/or enhancing our members' social-development, self-confidence, and their overall health & well-being. The daily goal for Among Friends members is for our members to have a happy and productive day taking part in activities and programs that interest them. The long-term goal of Among Friends is for adults with additional needs and disabilities to have improved well-being and improved/enhanced quality of life while also having the freedom to make their own living choices with equal access and full integration into the community. Among Friends accomplishes these goals by providing a wide variety of games, arts & crafts activities, painting, group movies, exercise equipment, Nintendo Wii dance and sports games, leadership and learning opportunities, and more to our members every day. Multiple activities occur at the same time allowing the individual member the ability to choose which activity or game he/she desires most. Throughout the month, Among Friends offers opportunities for our members to socialize outside of the normal 9:00-4:00 daily operating hours. The event(s) differ each month but members have the opportunity to attend holiday events, movie nights, game nights, formal dances, or any other special event occurring throughout the month. Among Friends is available to adults with additional needs and disabilities who would like to meet new people, create new friendships, enhance existing friendships, develop social skills, learn life tasks, and participate in programs planned especially for our member population. Among Friends is open to anybody with a physical and/or a cognitive disability and is fully accessible to anybody with a walker, wheelchair, and anyone who may be visually and/or hearing impaired. In addition to daily socialization programs and activities, and no additional cost to our members, we offer an exercise/healthy living program every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Our members have access to commercial and accessible exercise equipment, which include treadmills and recumbent bikes, in a program designed exclusively for our members to help build confidence, strength, and awareness of healthy lifestyles. Among Friends offers three different membership levels to our members. The Premiere plan is $300 a month and allows the member to come to Among Friends 4-5 days each week. The Preferred plan is $200 and allows members to come 2-3 days a week. The Standard plan is $100 and allows the member to come one day a week. Among Friends offers three different plans to meet the scheduling needs of our family caregivers, who rely on Among Friends to provide care for their attending family member. This allows our family caregivers the opportunity to work, run errands, take care of other family members, socialize, or conduct any other life task. Among Friends also offers three different plans so families can choose which options is most affordable for them. Among Friends also has a Scholarship Program which helps cover costs of monthly member dues if needed. Among Friends fundraises money to help cover scholarship costs so that even the standard membership of $100 isn't burdensome to our most vulnerable population. Among Friends wants to be welcoming of all members, regardless of economic background. Among Friends is open to adults age 18+ and does not discriminate in regards to disability, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or gender, or any other demographic. Personal aides or HTS caregivers must come with a member who requires assistance with personal needs, medications, medical or behavior issues, or when one-on-one care is required. Among Friends is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that operates on donations from the community. All donations are tax deductible. No State of Federal Funds are used.
