Mission Statement
The Delaware Adolescent Program, Inc. (DAPI) provides a standards-based education for pregnant and parenting teens with unique outreach, mentoring and supportive services promoting empowerment and self-sufficiency.
About This Cause
The Delaware Adolescent Program Inc. was founded in 1968 in New Castle County to afford pregnant teenagers a means to continue their education and receive maternal health monitoring. DAPI was designed to help adolescents deal with and reduce the multiple problems of early childbearing: school dropout, welfare dependency, a higher rate of health problems for teen mothers and their children, repeat pregnancies, lack of infant daycare facilities, and insufficient knowledge of infant development care. DAPI is the only statewide alternative school environment for pregnant and parenting teens with a center in each county. The program has enjoyed an average 98% graduation of seniors for the last 4 years with a 98% rate in transitioning younger students back to their home school. The holistic approach to supporting the entire student results in above-average success in academic and health outcomes as well as giving a good foundation in life skills with the tools necessary for economic success.
