Mission Statement

The mission of the Minnesota Zoo is to connect people, animals, and the natural world to save wildlife.

About This Cause

The Minnesota Zoological Garden opened its doors on May 22, 1978. Nicknamed the "New Zoo," it was revolutionary in its exhibit design and was one of the first zoos to feature its animals in open exhibits which were organized by their living environment as opposed to species. Today, the Minnesota Zoo is the state’s largest environmental learning center and an international leader in providing high-quality education and conservation programs. As one of Minnesota’s largest cultural treasures, it is home to over 4,500 animals from the familiar to the endangered. More than 41 million people have visited the Minnesota Zoo since its opening to enjoy exhibits, attend classes, and connect with the world's wildlife and wild places across its 485 acres. The mission of the Minnesota Zoo is to connect people, animals, and the natural world to save wildlife. Our vision is a world where wildlife thrives in Minnesota and beyond. The Minnesota Zoo Foundation exists to support the Minnesota Zoo.
