ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE

OAKLAND, California, 94609-0609 United States

Mission Statement

ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE removes barriers to sexual and reproductive health care and builds the power of Californians to demand health, justice, and dignity.

About This Cause

ACCESS was founded in 1993 by clinic escorts who witnessed the many barriers pregnant people were facing – especially young or poor pregnant people – to actually obtain an abortion. The vision for ACCESS was not only to provide information and practical support on all aspects of reproductive health but to build a community actively working to meet the real needs of folks seeking reproductive health services. As ACCESS’ work developed throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the organization began taking a leading role in uniting reproductive rights and social justice groups through the Campaign for Access and Reproductive Equity leading to redefining ACCESS as a Reproductive Justice (RJ) organization. This further led to releasing “Barriers to Entry: Ensuring Equitable and Timely Access to Medi-Cal for Pregnant Women and Reproductive Justice Advocacy from the Ground Up,” which outlined RJ policy recommendations and priorities for ACCESS from 2010-2013. ACCESS combines direct services, community education, and policy advocacy to promote real reproductive options and access to quality health care for people in California. No other organization in the state provides the same range of support for people considering or seeking an abortion.
