Mission Statement
The mission of OYO is to provide an exceptional orchestral experience to student musicians of all backgrounds in southeast Michigan. In order to foster an educational, supportive, and inclusive environment, OYO gives students many opportunities to perform in one of four orchestras, in chamber groups, at community outreach recitals, and in competitions. OYO provides value to its communities through its partnerships with educators, local schools, and organizations, who all support our student musicians.
About This Cause
Since its founding in 1975, the mission of Oakland Youth Orchestras (OYO) has always been to inspire student musicians by providing an exceptional orchestral experience. OYO, an educational nonprofit, gives 350 elementary to high school student musicians in southeast Michigan, of all socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities, the chance to perform in an orchestra, and to discover and nurture their passions for music. Oakland Youth Orchestras began in 1975, as the Oakland Youth Symphony, under the baton of Ervin Monroe, retired principal flutist of the Detroit Symphony. Today the guiding principles and long-standing mission of Oakland Youth Orchestras remains intact as evidenced through the challenging musical selections embraced by our student members. OYO provides a quality orchestral experience for students who have no such opportunity in their home schools. In addition, we provide an advanced performance medium for elementary through high school students in addition to that which they receive in their home school. OYO seeks to support and strengthen existing public and private school orchestra programs. Today, OYO is an independent, non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation with its own governing board and bylaws. To maintain its programs, OYO relies on private donations, grants from the MCACA and NEA, as well as community partners like Oakland University. OYO is made up of four orchestra tiers: Studio String, String, Philharmonia, and Symphony. In addition to attending weekly rehearsals and three annual performances, OYO students may also participate in chamber music, solo outreach performances, and competitions - all while learning from and laughing with each other!
