Mission Statement

Our mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to promote bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives.

About This Cause

Since its founding in 1973, Transportation Alternatives (T.A.) has paved the way for remarkable changes in New York City’s transportation infrastructure. Its network of over 111,000 active supporters, 11,500 dues-paying members and a committee of activists in every borough has led to many visible successes – the extraordinary growth of bicycling, the launch of Citi Bike, Select Bus Service, Neighborhood Slow Zones and more. T.A. introduced Vision Zero to New York, which is an ambitious goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on New York City’s streets within the next decade. As a direct result of T.A.’s influence, traffic safety became an election year issue in 2013 and 12 pieces of Vision Zero legislation were signed into law in 2014, including the historic lowering of the default citywide speed limit to 25 miles per hour. T.A. has been New York’s primary proponent of “Complete Streets,” streets designed with separate spaces for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and public transportation users in order to keep everyone out of each other’s way and out of harm’s way. The success of this model is demonstrated on Eighth and Ninth Avenues, with protected bike lanes, dedicated bus lanes, wide sidewalks and safe spaces for pedestrian crossings. Despite these successes, traffic crashes claimed the lives of 248 New Yorkers last year, more people than were killed by guns. There was a record low number of pedestrian deaths in 2014, yet 132 pedestrian deaths in a year is 132 too many. T.A.’s work is urgently needed – both to prevent the senseless loss of people’s lives and build our neighborhoods into healthier, happier and more sustainable places to live.
