Mission Statement
The mission of our multi-faceted arts organization, under the direction of Tandy Beal, is to enrich the cultural, educational and artistic life of the community. Excellence, flexibility and accessibility are values that underpin our choices. By presenting original concerts in dance, circus, music and theatre, and by offering workshops, ongoing arts education and innovative outreach, we strive to develop and support emerging and established artists, create partnerships with organizations to reach larger mutual goals, and unite community through the wonder of art.
About This Cause
For more than 50 years, Tandy Beal & Company has been producing art by creating innovative concerts, classes and community events. Although historically known for dance, our creative adventures have also been in circus, theatre, music and media. Through it all, Tandy has been making sense of this life by creating moving images. A skilled collaborator, she has brought TBC to work with artists ranging from A-Z: John Adams, Tim Burton, Frank Drake, Lou Harrison, Hi Kyung Kim and Korean National Treasure Aeju Lee, Art Lande, Bobby McFerrin, Carl Sagan and Frank Zappa. TBC ran the Pickle Family Circus for 10 years and brought members of TBC to Japan for a two-year run of the Moscow Circus, which Tandy wrote and directed. TBC has toured 48 states and four continents funded by the US State Department and Japan/US Friendship Commission, performing in festivals in Athens, Montreal, Japan, Spoleto, Aix-en-Provence, Malta, Belgrade, NYC and more. A community leader, TBC serves many populations. With ArtSmart, an arts in the schools education program, TBC brings art to 15,000 young people in Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties, annually. TBC has created benefit shows for Cesar Chavez Library, Lobero Theatre, Dominican Hospital, AIDS Project in San Francisco and Dallas, SF Symphony, and more. TBC created the Japan Cultural Fair, Cafezinho, Discover Dance! At the vanguard of non-profit entrepreneurship, TBC makes unique corporate events for the likes of SF 49ers, Pixar, LucasFilms, Oracle, Zales and UC Santa Cruz' Flat Fifty Celebration. Awards include: Center for Cultural Innovation, American Council for the Arts, American Film Institute, Bay Area Dance’s Izzie Award for Innovation, New Performance Festival, Montreux Golden Rose (for Voice/Dance), National Choreography Project, Arts Council of Silicon Valley commendations from the California State Legislature, Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (twice), 20+ grants from the NEA in dance and theatre, as well as California Arts Council, and Theatre Bay Area. Her work is featured in two books, The Pickle Clowns and with her husband Jon Scoville, Living Happily Ever After.
