Mission Statement
We are a non-profit organization providing an alternative to traditional mental health services through evidence-based programs that empower consumers of these services. Our mission is "to be the model for self-directed services available to mental health consumers and be the change agent to eliminate stigma in our community."
About This Cause
Your gift will serve individuals suffering from psychiatric conditions in Coos County Oregon. MHASWO provides two strong evidence-based programs: 1. Peer Delivered Services (PDS) - PDS follows a national trend that is proving to be a key component of health reform in Oregon. MHASWO provides the SHAMA (Self Help and Mutual Aid) House, a PDS drop in service in which members take an active role in organizing the operation and governance. Consumers of mental health experience a work-ordered day and relationship building. Mutual support and caring for each other is the underlying concept. SHAMA House is a learning center where PDS groups are provided at no charge to consumers of mental health. These include Driver Ed study, Food Handler Training, Peer Support, Art Therapy, Self Awareness, Journaling, Moving thru Depression, Book Club, Gardening, Music Awareness. 2. Supported Employment (SE) - SE has been added to the OARS as a required service offered to consumers of mental health in the state medicaid system. Our Coos County SE program is called "Working Wonders" because we are teaching the community to embrace diversity. SE is an evidence-based practice with the overriding philosophy that every person with a disability is capable of working if the right kind of job and work environment can be found. The model is derived from the Dartmouth Research Center and was offered to our agency as a contractor for Coos Health and Wellness in 2004. Supported Employment Services include support for all phases of employment such as considering, finding and maintaining a job. Working Wonders is rated by the Oregon Supported Employment Center for Excellence (OSECE) as a high performance program in Oregon.
