Mission Statement

NACAC promotes and supports permanent families for children and youth in the U.S. and Canada who have been in care—especially those in foster care and those with special needs.

About This Cause

NACAC is a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by adoptive parents. NACAC is dedicated to the belief that each child and youth has the right to a permanent, nurturing, and culturally sensitive family. In North America, tens of thousands of foster children and youth who can no longer live safely with their families are waiting for a permanent, loving family. These children, often labeled unadoptable or hard to place, are mostly school aged. They are often brothers and sisters who must be placed together, and many have serious physical, mental, or emotional challenges. Many are children of color. All of them need and deserve a family. In spite of the abuse, neglect, and instability of their early lives, these children and youth are regular kids, too. They love sports and arts and their siblings. Many thrive in school or in afterschool activities. They dream of a normal life - and a loving family to be theirs forever. Children and youth have the best chance to thrive in permanent families - families that will care for them now and into the future. Without a permanent family, foster children and youth may be moved from one home to another and be separated from their brothers and sisters. They too often change schools and neighborhoods, and must cope with new caregivers, teachers, rules, and friends. Each year, more than 20,000 foster youth leave care without a permanent family. These young people are at higher risk of teen pregnancy, homelessness, and unemployment. Many have no one to spend holidays with, no one to be grandparents to their children, and no mom or dad to guide them through the joys and challenges of everyday growing and living. NACAC's work encompasses four key areas: parent leadership capacity building, public policy advocacy, education/information sharing, and adoption support. ADOPTION SUPPORT NACAC provides information to prospective adopters, reminding them of the tens of thousands of children and teenagers waiting in foster care for a forever family. The Adoption Subsidy Resource Center provides critical assistance that enables families to obtain the medical and financial resources they need to raise children and youth adopted from foster care. PARENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT NACAC offers supportive services and leadership training to hundreds of adoptive, foster, and kinship parent groups. NACAC identifices adoptive parents who are potential group leaders and helps them establish supportive services for their peers. ADVOCACY Through community forums, training, and more, NACAC advocates for child welfare policy and practice reforms that will help children and youth find permanent families more quickly and help families receive the post-adoption support they need. NACAC testifies before Congress about the needs of foster children and youth and explains how the system can and should be reformed. EDUCATION & INFORMATION SHARING Through the most comprehensive adoption conference in North America, NACAC educates child welfare professionals, adoptive, foster, and kinship parents, and others touched by adoption. Staff offer training to parents and workers on topics such as adoption assistance, parent group development, and transracial parenting. By publishing the quarterly newsletter Adoptalk and other valuable resources, NACAC informs parents, child welfare professionals, and other child advocates about foster care and adoption issues. By donating to NACAC, you help support adoptive families, and find permanent families for the thousands of foster children who need one. We depend on public donations to continue our efforts on their behalf.
