Mission Statement

The Children's Place: where children and families heal from life's deepest hurts.

About This Cause

The Children’s Place is Kansas City’s specialized trauma treatment agency for children birth through eight years old. The agency opened its doors in 1978 in response to a significant need in Kansas City: children in our community were being identified as victims of abuse and neglect, but there were very few resources to help them heal, and preventative programs were virtually nonexistent. Our community needed a place of help and hope and, leaders in business, mental health, and medicine rallied together to open the doors of The Children’s Place. Forty years later, our mission remains: to help vulnerable children and families heal from life’s deepest hurts. Through our commitment to building relationships and evidence-based treatments, we are a place of healing for children and their families. Our programs and services at The Children’s Place work to equip children and families with the coping skills needed to transcend the hardships of their past and to thrive within their everyday lives through these three programs: Day Treatment is designed to treat the whole child by providing an array of therapeutic services (occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, mental health, and psychiatry) set within a quality early education environment. Here, the treatment process is three-fold: to calm the body and emotions (regulate), make a connection with others (relate), and learn (reason) so they can grow and thrive within their families and be ready to function in traditional daycares and kindergarten. Day Treatment serves children ages one to five who have faced multiple significant life challenges, often including abuse, domestic violence, and neglect. The average length of treatment is 15 months and includes 45 mental health sessions and 1,620 hours of classroom time. When a child graduates from the program they are curious about the world, eager to try new experiences, can demonstrate developmentally appropriate public behavior, and play and work with other children and adults in a learning environment, the essential qualities necessary for kindergarten success. The Counseling Center offers individual and family therapy services on an outpatient basis for children ages two to eight. Our trauma-responsive therapists use best practice treatments to help children heal from a wide range of traumatic experiences—including loss of loved ones, accidents, divorce, community, and domestic violence, and abuse. The standard treatment includes weekly sessions spread over an average of 13 months. During therapy, children learn ways to express their emotions, use their voice, develop other coping skills, and build stronger relationships with their caregivers. When a young child experiences stressful life events, the result is often developmental delays in one or more areas of cognition, language, social, emotional, and motor skills. Therefore, our diagnostic team offers developmental screenings for more than 350 children annually age six weeks to six years who have been placed in state custody. Children who score in the “at risk” or clinical range are referred for treatment at the agency or, based on the areas of concern, one of our community partners. Early intervention is essential to the success of remediating the effects of traumatic events in a young child’s rapidly developing brain. Family Support Services, through caregiver groups at the agency and individual in-home services, provides support and education to adults raising a child who has experienced adverse life events. The program offers parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn trauma-responsive parenting skills that increase their ability to be better attuned with the child’s needs. When a child experiences a traumatic event, the entire family is affected. The support and education provided by this program help parents feel more confident in their parenting skills, which result in less stress in the home.
