Mission Statement

The Mission of the Home of Grace for Women is “to empower women ages 18 and up on their journey to recovery by providing a comprehensive faith-based substance abuse treatment program designed to promote healing, restoration and holistic transformation.”

About This Cause

The Home of Grace for Women was established in 1973 by Doris Wood-Littleton who recognized the critical need for a residential substance abuse treatment program for females. She began taking women into her personal residence, providing them with shelter, food and lots of prayer and attention to assist them in overcoming addiction. On July 14, 1975, the Home of Grace was incorporated and a governing Board of Directors was elected. By 1978, the number of women seeking assistance resulted in the need for additional space. Twenty-six acres of land were purchased in Eight Mile, Alabama, and an old school building was moved to the property as the first recovery center. Overs the years, more buildings were erected and additional adjacent property was acquired, increasing the size of the campus to 271 acres. In 1993, the Chapel/Recreation complex was completed. Hannah’s House, a dormitory to house addicted pregnant women and their children, was completed in 2000. Doris Wood-Littleton passed away in 2023 at the age of 95, leaving a legacy of service, love and devotion to be continued under the leadership of Valarie McKinley, Executive Director, and Pamela Burson, Administrative Director, and a dedicated Board of Directors and staff members. The Home of Grace for Women provides an impactful, evidence-based recovery program which treats substance abuse on a spiritual, physical, mental and emotional level. While residing in a safe, nurturing environment, the women are provided with nutritious meals, group and individual counseling, life skills classes, job readiness classes, and access to community health services. After completing an initial 90-day program, a woman has the option to enter our Graduate / Transitional Living Program, and continue to reside on-campus while working and/or furthering their education. Mothers are able to reconcile with their minor children who can also reside with them. Pregnant women who enter the Home of Grace may complete the program while awaiting the birth of their child, and live in Hannah House, a dormitory specially designed to meet the needs of young mothers and their babies. The Transitional Living Program has been expanded to accommodate more women due to the lack of affordable housing in our area, as well as the fact that other transitional living programs for women are at capacity with long waiting lists. Therefore, the Home of Grace's transitional living program fills a critical need in a continuum of care that prevents relapse as well as homelessness. Our newest program, Outpatient Treatment Services, provides an opportunity for women who are not able to participate in a residential program, due to family, work or other obligations. They have access to the counseling, AA/NA meetings, job training and other services. The cost for a woman entering the initial 90-day program is $4,500, but through grants and individual donations, we are able to provide a $3,000 scholarship if needed. Because we are not a medical facility, insurance is not accepted. From its beginning, the Home of Grace has sought to make sure that our programs are affordable and accessible to any woman who is seeking to be released from the bondage of addiction. Therefore, no woman is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. Women in the Transitional Housing Program pay rent based on their income. Fees for Outpatient Services are also based on a sliding fee scale. Since its founding 51 years ago, the Home of Grace for Women has provided services to over 20,000 women,
