Mission Statement
The mission of the East Los Angeles Women’s Center is to ensure that all women, girls and their families live in a place of safety, health, and personal well-being, free from violence and abuse, with equal access to necessary health services and social support, with an emphasis on Latino communities.
About This Cause
The East Los Angeles Women’s Center (ELAWC is a leading voice and advocate for survivors and their families affected by sexual, domestic, and intimate partner violence and HIV/AIDS. In 1976 a small group of dedicated Latinas in East Los Angeles established the first-in-the-nation bilingual hotline for Spanish–speaking survivors of sexual assault. Today, ELAWC delivers innovative, comprehensive, culturally-responsive services that build on a foundation of trauma-informed, evidence-based practices designed to heal, support, protect, and empower the communities we serve. Working in collaboration with our partners we also foster the implementation of policies and practices that support social justice and human rights. ELAWC has earned a reputation as a trusted and compassionate resource working to empower and transform lives – and the lives of future generations. In 2020, ELAWC: - Received 3,394 Crisis Hotline Calls - 8,582 Web chats - 290 Emergency responses at LAC+USC Medical Center - 33,840 Bed Nights for Women and Children - 1,600 Youth Engaged in Violence Prevention Outreach - 1,500 Received HIV Education Prevention Education - 67 Men joined Fatherhood + Men's Circles - 454 Households Secured Permanent Housing HOMELESS, POVERTY, IMMIGRATION - Of the survivors served 28% were homeless, over 86% were living below the poverty line and 60% were monolingual Spanish speaking – 75% of those served reported that they had improved their quality of life for themselves and their children after receiving services. - As of July 2018 the Hope & Heart Emergency Shelter has provided a safe haven to 90 women and 50 children and provided housing assistance to over 250 individuals and families.
