About This Cause
Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Inc. (DVLS) is an agency dedicated to providing quality pro bono legal services to the poor in Delaware. Established in 1981 by the Delaware State Bar Association to fill the void created by severe cutbacks in the federally funded Legal Services Corporation, DVLS is a driving force in legal services in Delaware. In April of 1982, DVLS began accepting cases and as of May 1, 1982, had 150 attorneys agreeing to participate in our program. DVLS pro bono volunteers now total approximately 600. DVLS recruits, trains and mentors attorneys willing to serve as pro bono counsel for needy individuals with meritorious civil legal issues. We administer or participate in several programs, including the PFA Pro Bono Program, Wills Events, and the Senior Legal Hotline among others. In 2017, DVLS helped to plan, coordinate and conduct two Wills for Seniors Events. The first Wills for Seniors was held on Martin Luther King Jr., Day as part of a day of service promoted by the DSBA. The event is a collaborative effort of DVLS and the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section of the DSBA. The second Wills for Seniors Event was held in October during the Pro Bono Celebration week. In addition to the more formal Wills For Seniors Events, DVLS hosted wills clinics at low-income senior housing facilities. The DVLS staff worked diligently in advance of the events to do intakes for all the clients and send out the correspondence. DVLS staff and volunteers also drafted documents in advance. Volunteer attorneys, students, paralegals and administrative staff helped at the events by checking clients in, working with clients, and helping with administrative tasks.
