Mission Statement
Friends of Mint Plaza (FoMP) works to ensure that Mint Plaza is a vibrant, safe and memorable public space for the use and enjoyment of visitors and neighborhood residents alike through on-going maintenance, programming, and general management of the Plaza area.
About This Cause
Friends of Mint Plaza (FoMP) is a California non-profit corporation and a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organization managed by a five-member board of directors. FoMP was specially created to manage and maintain Mint Plaza for the public’s benefit. To accomplish its mission, FoMP has established the following Performance Goals: • Ensure that the Plaza becomes a treasured public space, accessible to all and preserved for future generations of San Franciscans. • Maintain the Plaza in a clean and orderly fashion that makes it a safe and inviting place for people of all ages and incomes at all hours of the day from sunrise to late night. • Activate the Plaza area through thoughtful and creative programming, including public markets, art exhibitions, live music, and theater. FoMP has a Major Encroachment Permit with the City and County of San Francisco that allows FoMP to charge a user fee for private events in Mint Plaza. In return FMP is responsible for the management, maintenance and capital improvements of Mint Plaza. In addition, FoMP is responsible for the management of private events as well as public programming of Mint Plaza. ABOUT MINT PLAZA In April 2007, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Mayor Gavin Newsom approved legislation to transform a 290’-long portion of Jessie Street stretching between Fifth and Mint Streets into San Francisco ’s newest public open space, aptly named Mint Plaza. Mint Plaza was consciously designed to accommodate a wide range of uses, including art exhibitions, theatre, live music, cafés, and small festivals, while also providing a quiet, green and clean refuge for neighboring residents, downtown employees and visitors to enjoy.
