Mission Statement

Constructed around 1793 as one of the first dwellings in Old Town Baltimore, the historic Flag House was the home and business of flag maker Mary Young Pickersgill. Mrs. Pickersgill crafted the enormous 30' x 42' Star-Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 and inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the words to our national anthem. Since 1927, the Flag House has operated a public historic site and museum and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Today, visitors encounter the historic house furnished to an approximate 1813 appearance and can tour our permanent exhibit Family of Flag Makers. The Flag House is dedicated to our mission of creating personal connections to American history through the multi-faceted story of the Star-Spangled Banner. Each year, the museum hosts 11,000 visitors for educational programs, field trips, and community events. The Flag House regularly partners with other historic sites, community organizations, and cultural institutions to promote Baltimore's rich history and arts.
