About This Cause
Family Services, Inc. (FSI) is one of the region’s most enduring community social service nonprofit organizations having grown from 1908 roots in the work of Dr. Jacob Bird and others involved in the early days of the Social Services League in Montgomery County. For well-over a century FSI has responded to the growth in the region and adapted its programming and added resources to meet the evolving needs of a changing community. Over the years the organization’s goal has been to serve the most vulnerable and at-risk individuals in our community including families with young children, new residents seeking a better life, and those learning to live with emotional and traumatic scars, mental illness, and family stress. FSI offers a network and continuum of social, health, and community services in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, Maryland through 34 well-known community programs that historically provide in excess of 113,690 service units in a year. Our programs provide services to infants, children, youth, families, as well as adults with serious mental illness and are organized into the following categories of work: 1) Clinical Behavioral Health Services – outpatient community mental health and substance abuse intervention and counseling services (e.g., the Gaithersburg Outpatient Mental Clinic, OnTrack MD, Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies, and Positive Aging Program). 2) Rehabilitation Services – psychiatric rehabilitation and support services, supported housing and supported employment (e.g., Montgomery Station, and The Independence Program). 3) Children and Family Services - early childhood and home-visiting, childcare centers, early head start, and access to emergency safety-net resources (e.g., Discovery Station Early Head Start, the Family Discovery Center, Watch Me Grow Child Development Center, and Healthy Families Montgomery). 4) Family, Community and School-Based Services - school-based mental health and youth services, domestic violence shelter, and in-home counseling (e.g., Linkages to Learning, Youth First Care PGCPS, Thriving Germantown HUB, Care and Connections for Families, and the Betty Ann Krahnke Center). Becoming part of the Sheppard Pratt organization in 1998 marked a major milestone for FSI. As part of Sheppard Pratt, FSI has become integrated into the largest nonprofit provider of mental health, addiction, special education, and social services in the country with a mission to improve the quality of life of individuals and families with compassionate service and community support and empowerment. The Sheppard Pratt brand offers a wide array of integrated resources to the communities historically served by FSI with for example the addition of special needs schools, specialized services for autism, and emergency access to psychiatric care and hospital services, as well as access to some of the nation’s expert leaders in psychosocial and behavioral health research, programing, and intervention.
