Baltimore Choral Arts Society sustains and promotes the art of choral music. We are dedicated to the highest standards of artistic excellence.

About This Cause

The Baltimore Choral Arts Society, founded in 1966, is one of Maryland's premier professional cultural institutions. Our 150 singers perform throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and internationally in ensembles of various sizes as the Symphonic Chorus, Chorus, and Chamber Singers. Choral Arts toured to England in January 2020, following previous tours to France and Spain. The Baltimore Choral Arts Society provides a number of thoughtful and impactful music education programs that serve youth in and around Baltimore, including CoroLAB, Vocal Fellows, Student Composer Project, and Sing and Play. Music Director Anthony Blake Clark has conducted Baltimore Choral Arts for three seasons and is one of the freshest young voices in classical music. Clark is the Director of Choral Activities for The George Washington University’s Corcoran School of Art and Design. He has prepared choirs for esteemed maestros such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Simon Halsey CBE, Marin Alsop, and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla for performances with internationally renowned ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Clark prepared choruses for David Lang’s 1,000-voice the public domain and John Luther Adams’ In the Name of the Earth at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival. A Texas native, Clark studied composition and conducting at Baylor University School of Music and earned a Master of Music in conducting from the University of Birmingham under Simon Halsey CBE. His compositions have been heard across the U.S. and Europe. Prior to Clark’s tenure, Choral Arts was led by Music Director Emeritus Tom Hall and Founding Music Director Theodore Morrison. Baltimore Choral Arts enjoys partnerships with acclaimed collaborators and is invited regularly to perform with prominent orchestras, such as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Choral Arts has collaborated with artists including Sweet Honey in the Rock, Chanticleer, Dave Brubeck, the King’s Singers, Anonymous 4, Peter Schickele, Kathy Mattea, and others. Baltimore Choral Arts’ innovative programs often feature both choral and orchestral music, staged theater works, and mixed media enhancements. For more than 20 years, WMAR-TV, an ABC network affiliate, has featured Choral Arts in an hour-long broadcast special on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This program, called Christmas with Choral Arts, won an Emmy Award in 2006 and is also broadcast on WBJC-FM and WYPR-FM. The ensemble has been featured frequently on The First Art (Public Radio International), Performance Today (National Public Radio), and VOX (XM Radio). Choral Arts’ international profile has risen over the years with four tours to Europe, most recently to England in January 2020. Acclaimed recordings include Christmas at America’s First Cathedral (Gothic Records), Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice and Introducing the World of American Jewish Music (Naxos), Christmas with Choral Arts, and Rachmaninoff All-Night Vigil.
