Mission Statement
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people in over 150 countries and territories who campaign to end abuses of human rights.
About This Cause
Amnesty International is a global movement of ordinary people committed to an extraordinary mission: to mobilize millions of people around the world to protect the rights of all people to live free from violence and injustice. Amnesty International is committed to building a world where all people can enjoy all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR, adopted by the international community following the horrors of World War II, says that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Its 30 articles cover the economic, civil, social, cultural and political areas of our lives. They range from the rights to life and security – such as water, food, healthcare, shelter and freedom from torture – to those that provide full participation in that life, such as freedom from discrimination, freedom of expression, education, work, association and religion. The movement began in 1961 when British lawyer Peter Benenson read about two Portuguese students who were jailed for raising their glasses in a toast to freedom. Outraged, he wrote a newspaper appeal calling for the release of anyone imprisoned solely for their ideas of beliefs. The first appeal on behalf of these “prisoners of conscience” was based on his belief that public pressure could challenge tyranny, and it inspired mass support for an international campaign to protect human rights. Amnesty International was born. Today, Amnesty International unites the voices of more than 10 million people from over 150 countries to achieve our goals. More than 48,000 people have been freed from prison, saved from torture, or protected from death threats following action by Amnesty International. Together, we have persuaded governments to change their laws and practices, stop torture, commute death sentences and hold accountable those responsible for abuses. We campaigned successfully for the establishment of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Convention Against Torture. Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its life-saving work. Amnesty International is impartial and not affiliated with any political, religious or corporate interests.
