Mission Statement

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC), Maryland, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1963, with the mission to enable adults to transform their lives and enrich our community through adult education and English literacy. We fulfill our mission by implementing a broad array of instructional options to meet adult learners' varied needs, and by offering that instruction at little or no cost to those learners, at times and in locations convenient to them to help them reach functional levels of reading, speaking and writing skills.

About This Cause

Since its founding as a one-on-one tutoring program in 1963, LCMC has added conversation classes, independent computer-based instruction, on-the-job skills training, intensive classroom-based ESL instruction, a tutor-based GED preparation program, and workshops in workplace literacy, health literacy, and more. LCMC’s goals are to achieve economic and social equity in our community through providing high-quality, flexible and affordable instruction to adults in their local communities; engaging and support our community's educated populace as volunteer tutors and teachers; and delivering measurable outcomes that demonstrate the effectiveness of our services. Annually, our programs serve approximately 2,000 adults and engage approximately 600 volunteers as tutors, trainers, teaching assistants, teachers, tutor contacts, board members and office helpers. Since the organization’s inception, we have trained over 10,000 volunteer tutors who have taught over 20,000 adult learners.
