NATIONAL LOW INCOME HOUSING COALITION AND LOW INCOME HOUSING

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20005 United States

Mission Statement

The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated solely to achieving socially just public policy that assures people with the lowest incomes in the United States have affordable and decent homes.

About This Cause

Founded in 1974, NLIHC is a national membership organization that works in support of federal affordable housing programs, focusing particularly on those that serve the lowest income households, including those who are homeless. NLIHC is unique in that we do not represent any segment of the housing sector, but rather work with and on behalf of low income people in need of affordable homes. Our primary focus is on the housing needs of extremely low income (ELI) households, those with incomes at 30% of area median income or less, the only population in the U.S. experiencing an absolute shortage of affordable housing. NLIHC members include non-profit housing providers, homeless service providers, fair housing organizations, state and local housing coalitions, public housing agencies, private developers and property owners, housing researchers, local and state government agencies, faith-based organizations, public and assisted housing residents and their organizations, and concerned citizens. NLIHC’s work is informed by a diverse spectrum of affordable housing stakeholders. Because we are beholden to no one but the low income people we aim to help, NLIHC is referred to by many as the “conscience” of the affordable housing community in Washington, DC, respected by officials on both sides of the aisle. NLIHC does not seek nor accept government funding, allowing us to retain complete impartiality in our policy analysis and integrity in our policy recommendations. NLIHC is funded entirely by private donations and member dues and rely on robust relationships with foundations and corporate donors to support our work.
