About This Cause
The National Aquarium is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire conservation of the world's aquatic treasures. We fulfill this mission through a variety of activities, including hands-on environmental restoration, conservation education, marine animal rescue, and the operation of a world-class aquarium. Since opening in 1981, our Baltimore venue has welcomed more than 48.5 million visitors and has reached millions more through community and educational programs. Our 1.3 million annual visitors come from all across the country and world. Embracing our special responsibility – and vast potential – to build public awareness of the significant threats facing our imperiled aquatic resources, the Aquarium’s commitment to our mission has never been stronger. Galleries and exhibits are designed to motivate individual and community action on behalf of the oceans. Both on- and off-site, we highlight important conservation challenges while providing opportunities for constituents to take action as volunteers, advocates, and citizens. Guests, staff, and volunteers learn how to protect our fragile natural resources and discover the interconnectivity of people, wildlife, and habitats. Whether working in our own backyard or participating in national conversations about the future of our one world ocean, the Aquarium’s leadership within the conservation sector is well recognized and is evolving every day.
