UNIVERSITY OF DC FOUNDATION

WASHINGTON DC, District of Columbia, 20008-1122 United States

Mission Statement

Embracing its essence as a public historically black urban-focused land-grant university in the nation's capital, UDC is dedicated to serving the needs of the community of the District of Columbia, and producing lifelong learners who ae transformative leaders in the workforce, government, nonprofit sectors and beyond. Our vision is that all students will achieve their highest levels of human potential and our motto is: Aspire, Accomplish, and Take on the World. UDC is the only public university in the nation’s capital, and the country’s only exclusively urban land-grant institution. We are an open enrollment, primarily commuter school. Many of the 4,500 students we enroll are beyond the age when people typically seek higher education. Over 60 percent of them began their studies in DC public schools. Many of them struggle with life’s heaviest burdens, and we offer their only hope to overcome poverty and despair. We are the least expensive university in the Washington metropolitan area. We provide workforce training free to any DC resident, and quality certification ranging from associate’s to graduate and professional degrees. Our main goal is to become the nation’s model of urban student success.

About This Cause

The University of the District of Columbia offers over 80 undergraduate and graduate academic degree programs through six colleges and schools: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences, School of Business and Public Administration, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, UDC Community College and the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law. As a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), UDC actively works to recruit a diverse student body. With the growing education and economic disparities in the District, UDC prioritizes multicultural education to ensure students have access to an inclusive curriculum and academic environment that promotes twenty-first-century skills – including diversity learning. The University believes students who enter the workforce with respect and understanding for their own identities and the identities of others exhibit creativity, dynamism and improved decision-making and are thus capable of sparking innovation throughout the region. UDC’s road ahead is mapped out in our strategic plan: The Equity Imperative. The strategies it lays out—informed by input from town halls held around the city and suggestions gathered from students, faculty, staff, and our Board of Trustees—will transform the University into a powerful source of hope, education, creativity, research, and urban resilience. Its tactics are affordable and its mission is essential to the future health and stability of the District. The University of the District of Columbia is helping address the District’s workforce development challenges by playing a critical role in creating academic and career pathways for students of all ages. *The District’s Public University - UDC is building a national higher education model that will supply diverse talent to all levels of the workforce and graduate leaders who have the values and skills to gain employment, become leaders, and create jobs. *Building Tomorrow’s Talent - UDC is launching an initiative that nurtures a sustainable source of diverse, business-ready STEM talent in the District public schools. The initiative aims to foster enhanced outcomes for students in Wards 7 and 8 by training teachers in research-based educational practices, identifying high-potential students, and promoting career readiness and leadership. *Improving the District Through Research and Innovation - UDC is pursuing leading-edge investigations in cybersecurity, quantum information sciences, urban food hubs, STEM mentorships, advanced materials and manufacturing, opioid response and much more. We help our industry and government partners find solutions to some of the most pressing urban problems of today. The UDC Foundation is the charitable arm of the University. Gifts and grants to the Foundation enable the University to achieve the promise and vision of its priorities.
