Mission Statement

The Student Press Law Center works at the intersection of law, journalism and education to promote, support and defend the rights of student journalists and their advisers at the high school and college levels. The SPLC provides information, training and legal assistance at no charge to student journalists and the educators who work with them. The nonprofit, nonpartisan SPLC provides information, training and legal assistance at no charge to student journalists and the educators who work with them.

About This Cause

Founded in 1974, the Student Press Law Center is an independent, non-partisan 501c(3) organization that promotes, supports and defends the First Amendment and press freedom rights of high school and college journalists and their advisers. No other organization in the U.S. is focused squarely on protecting the rights of student journalists. Independent journalism is crucial to a healthy democracy.
