Mission Statement
Martha's Table's mission is to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities. We achieve this by providing high-quality comprehensive programming in four strategic areas: education, health and wellness, family and community supports, and community investments.
About This Cause
Our history reflects a commitment to serve where the need is greatest, beginning at 14th and W Streets in 1980, a center of significant need at the time. Starting from humble beginnings in 1980 as a safe space for children to access after-school meals, Martha’s Table now operates nationally accredited education programs, fights for food justice, and promotes family success, supporting over 30,000 D.C. residents each year. Martha’s Table has a deep commitment to and collaboration with our neighbors to deliver on our mission to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities in Washington, D.C. To close the gap in resources and increase opportunities, Martha’s Table shifted to a place-based strategy helping our neighbors to thrive in the communities they know and love. Today, Martha’s Table provides programs in four strategic areas: •Quality Education - Nationally accredited early childhood education, family visiting, and programming for older youth. •Health & Wellness - Martha’s Table is rooted in providing healthy meals – we’ve evolved to offer so much more in terms of programming, but access to healthy foods is a key pillar of our work. We do this through offering no-cost, farmer’s market-style Lobby Markets each day at two locations, we deliver nutritious meals via McKenna’s Wagon (which is what you are helping us to support today), and showing up in schools across Wards 7 and 8 through our Joyful Food Markets. In the summer, we know children do not have the same access to fresh meals, so we partnered with DCPS to provide pop-up Summer Joyful Food Markets serving families across DC. •Family & Community Supports - We also believe that when families have the right resources they will thrive and offer programming such as our Baby & Me and District Dads to ensure parents are both supported and supportive. We provide connections and resources (clothing, critical essentials) so that parents are supported in their important role as family leaders. •Community Investments - We invest deeply in the communities to build on the existing economic strengths and initiatives within the community.
