Mission Statement

Baltimore Community Rowing (BCR) embraces the transformative power of rowing by promoting fitness, competition, and recreation for everyone. BCR actively cultivates a welcoming and inclusive rowing community to reflect the diversity of the Baltimore metro region and build an equitable access point to this life-changing sport.

About This Cause

Baltimore Community Rowing (BCR) promotes the sport of rowing for fitness, competition, and recreation by offering programs for middle school, high school, and adult athletes in Baltimore City and the surrounding counties. Housed in the Baltimore Rowing & Water Resource Center at Middle Branch Park, BCR is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive rowing community that reflects the socio-economic diversity of the Baltimore metro region and actively works to break down barriers to participation for Baltimore City Public Schools students and Baltimore City residents. Rowing is a lifelong sport, with athletes from 12 years old to their early 80s participating at BCR in programs that include learn-to-row lessons, competitive teams, developmental squads, and recreational classes. Rowers can learn the sport at any time. A competitive spirit, community minded focus, and an emphasis on individual development within a team dynamic are cornerstones of all BCR programs. The BCR Middle School Team is a developmental, skills- and fitness-based program appropriate to developing young athletes and encouraging a love of the sport of rowing. Upon completion of the middle school program, athletes have the opportunity to join the BCR High School Team. The high school team focuses on building the necessary skills and physical fitness for competition, teamwork, time management, and dedication to being a well-rounded athlete. The middle and high school programs at BCR are a fantastic mix of public and private, city and county, and homeschool students united in training and racing, all of whom gain valuable life lessons on relationship building within a diverse community. Financial assistance are provided to all students who need it, and all Baltimore City middle school students row for free through a partnership with City Schools. Adult programs include Learn-to-Row lessons for new athletes, free community indoor rowing instruction, indoor rowing fitness classes, college summer teams, and coached teams with goals from fitness and recreation to skill development and training for regional and national competitions. Athletes can begin their rowing journey at any age and level of fitness. BCR focuses on meeting athletes where they are and building a supportive community around those new to the sport. Donations to BCR support scholarships and fee assistance for rowers of all ages, the expansion of free community programs, and operations costs that allow BCR to direct staffing and resources to community programming.
