Mission Statement
Avalon Center works to end domestic and sexual violence by breaking the cycle of abuse through prevention, education, shelter and support services in the greater Williamsburg and Middle Peninsula communities. By offering tools for safety, self-sufficiency, and empowerment, Avalon works to break the cycle of abuse and helps create a positive future.
About This Cause
Avalon embraces a philosophy of EMPOWERMENT and TRAUMA INFORMED CARE. Through providing information and resources we want to empower survivors to make the choices they feel are best for their lives, all the while acknowledging and understanding the effects of trauma on survivors. All of Avalon's services free and confidential. RESIDENTIAL SERVICES 24-Hour Help Line - (757) 258-5051: Emotional support, resources, advocacy and information are offered to victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The Help Line is the entry point for people to call in order to be assessed for shelter. Shelter: Occupancy includes women and their children (boys and girls in school and under the age of 18.) Residents stay for an average of 30 days. Priority is given to victims/survivors of domestic or sexual violence. Homeless women within our service area are accepted based on space availability. The shelter provides case management, housing coordination counseling, legal advocacy, life skills, and children’s services. Some transportation is provided for essential services. Extended Stay Apartments: Six two-bedroom units, 36 bed capacity, are reserved for clients progressing to the next stage of self-sufficiency. OUTREACH SERVICES Counseling: Individual Counseling is offered to male and female adult and child survivors of domestic and sexual violence through the Outreach Office. Counseling sessions are offered by appointment. There are also support groups offered. Court and Hospital Accompaniment: Avalon provides accompaniment for clients who are involved with the court system. We also offer crisis intervention, support and resources to women hospitalized as a result of a physical or sexual assault. Avalon has a Legal Advocate, who is not a lawyer, but works in conjunction with local law enforcement officials and judicial systems on behalf of clients. Housing Coordination: Avalon assists our clients with searching for housing, landlord negotiation, and case management that helps survivors gain and/or retain housing. Education and Outreach: Avalon offers educational presentations that work to inform the community about domestic and sexual violence. We also have a Youth Leadership Council aimed at educating young people about healthy relationships. Cellular Phone Program: Donated cellular phones are made available to our clients and residents to increase the safety of the women and children we serve. The phones are programmed to dial 911 and those that are not used for this purpose are recycled and provide funding for Avalon. Volunteer opportunities are also available. Avalon relies on volunteers to help in all areas, such as helping with special events, administrative assistance, transporting residents, childcare, and working as an advocate in the emergency shelter.
