About This Cause

Organization Vision, Mission & History: Every day in America the death toll from gunfire is more than three Sandy Hook massacres. If you are 50 years old, in your lifetime guns have been used to injure about 5 million people, 1.5 million fatally. In the U.S., the gun homicide rate is about 20 times more than the average rate for all other populous, high-income countries. This epidemic is largely a result of uniquely easy access to guns, driven primarily by a gun industry that exists to manufacture; and profit from the sale of, dangerous weapons. Our vision is of a safer America, where children can play, go to the movies and attend school free from the fear of being killed or injured by a gun; where there is a year when no child dies from a gun; an America where families, communities and businesses thrive and prosper free from gun violence. Mission: To transform America’s attitudes and behaviors around guns, and demonstrably reduce firearm injury and death through research-based public education, high impact litigation, and effective public policy. Brady is the only national organization dedicated to integrate these three focused strategies to reduce gun violence and death. We are proud to bring together millions of Americans, from across the political spectrum, behind solutions that save lives. History: Brady has a long and rich history of inspired and strong leadership on gun violence prevention, championing the reduction of gun death and injury in America for 40 years. Dr. Mark Borinsky, who had been robbed and nearly killed at gunpoint, founded the organization in 1974 as the National Council to Control Handguns. Pete Shields became chairman in 1978 following the murder of his twenty-three-year-old son, Nick, in 1974. The organization was then renamed Handgun Control, Inc. in 1980. In the assassination attempt on President Reagan on March 31, 1981, Jim Brady, then serving as Reagan’s press secretary suffered a serious head wound that left him partially paralyzed for life. Jim and his wife, Sarah, joined the organization in the mid-1980s and have been fighting for sensible gun laws ever since. In November 1993, the organization scored a major federal legislative victory, on behalf of the American people, with the passage and signing of the Brady Law that requires background checks on all gun sales made at federally licensed firearm dealers. In 2001, the organization was renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence to recognize Jim and Sarah Brady’s commitment and courage to making America a safer place.
