Mission Statement
NAMI Maryland is a statewide organization, with thirteen local affiliates, dedicated to advocacy for and education of persons with illnesses, their families and the community. NAMI Maryland advocates for the public and private resources needed to assure the availability, accessibility and quality of comprehensive mental health services throughout the state and for research for causes and cures of serious mental illness. It also provides consumers and families the education needed to successfully live with serious mental illnesses, educates the general public about the stigma endured by those with serious mental illness and provides support to families and consumers to help them cope with the challenges of serious mental illness.
About This Cause
NAMI Maryland, located at 10632 Little Patuxent Parkway #454, Columbia, Maryland 21044, was founded in 1983. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with mental illnesses (including brain disorders) and their families. We are a 501(c)3 organization Although NAMI programs are open to all regardless of income, the majority of participants have incomes well below the area median in each locality. The vast majority of the individuals with mental illness and many of the families who use our services have incomes below the median in Maryland and in their locality. Although we do not collect income data for our program participants, officials in the local and state mental health agencies from whom we receive numerous referrals confirm that the majority of the individuals with mental illness seeking our help have modest incomes that meet the criteria for medical assistance or pharmacy assistance. Anecdotally, our program leaders and participants share that the vast majority of program participants in our peer programs for individuals with mental illness across the state are low income. For example, an informal survey of our consumer peer support group attendees revealed that 90% were on incomes well below the poverty level since they met the low income eligibility level for social security benefits. As many as ¼ in one affiliate’s group had been homeless in the last 4 years.
