Mission Statement
Unlike many health charities, The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. (CCF) is a LOCAL organization founded by the late Shirley Howard. For over 30 years, The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. has awarded more than $37.6 million in grants to local area hospitals benefiting pediatric patients and their families. When CCF was founded in 1983, there were no Pediatric Oncology Units in Maryland (or Washington, D.C.) One out of ten newly diagnosed cancer patients survived. Today, the child, family friendly units are the norm in area hospitals, thanks, in large part, due to CCF. Today, eight out of ten children survive the dreaded diagnosis of cancer. THE CCF IMPACT: Scores of researchers throughout the United States, who have made significant breakthroughs in childhood cancer treatment, began their careers with grants from CCF. With dollars raised from our generous donors, CCF distributes grant dollars to area doctors and researchers making advances in pediatric cancers.

Fact Sheet: The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. (CCF) Each day 35 children in the United States are newly diagnosed with cancer. Children’s cancer is the #1 disease killer of children. Unlike many health charities, The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. (CCF) is a LOCAL organization founded by the late Shirley Howard. For over 30 years, The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. has awarded more than $37.6 million in grants to local area hospitals benefiting pediatric patients and their families. When CCF was founded in 1983, there were no Pediatric Oncology Units in Maryland (or Washington, D.C.) One out of ten newly diagnosed cancer patients survived. THE CCF IMPACT IN TREATING CHILDHOOD CANCER Scores of researchers throughout the United States, who have made significant breakthroughs in childhood cancer treatment, began their careers with grants from CCF. One such young researcher CCF believed in was Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr. Today Dr. Carson is an internationally renowned Pediatric Neurosurgeon. Dr. Jeffrey Toretsky of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has been able to leverage $1 million in CCF funding over a ten year period into over $10 million in funding for a significant breakthrough in targeted drug therapy to treat pediatric cancers. Dr. Toretsky received a grant of $4.3 million from NIH, based on the results he achieved with initial CCF funding. Dr. Toretsky dedicated his 2010 article in Clinical Cancer Research Magazine of the American Association for Cancer Research “in honor of Mrs. Shirley Howard and The Children’s Cancer Foundation…Their support was critical in maintaining our research program when many thought direct targeting of EWS-FLI1 was not possible.” CCF FUNDS FACILITIES, RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS With dollars raised from our generous donors, CCF is able to support our area hospitals, including: o Children’s National Health System in Washington, D.C. o Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Washington DC o The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland o Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland o The University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore Maryland o The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland With dollars raised from our generous donors, CCF distributes grant dollars to area doctors and researchers making advances in pediatric cancers. Often CCF funding is vital to their initial research and can make a direct impact in scientific advances leading to cancer breakthroughs, with the ultimate goal of saving lives.
