CAMERA's central focus is the promotion of balanced and accurate information about Israel and the Middle East in the mass media. Through systematic documentation of the coverage in all major print and electronic media and via analyses published and disseminated to the organization's 30,000 members as well as to opinion-makers, journalists, and Congress, CAMERA provides corrective and supplemental information about the complex Middle East. A non-denominational group that takes no political position regarding ultimate solutions to the Arab-Israeli conflict, CAMERA has grown from a local grassroots group founded in 1982 to a national organization. Its role as an information source on Middle East issues and as a monitoring agency has gained increasing prominence and influence as journalists, Members of Congress and community groups regularly seek reliable data on the Middle East. CAMERA has built a reputation for commitment to careful research as a foundation for promoting better reporting. CAMERA has also emphasized as an essential task its educating of citizens about the hazards of biased coverage and about the need for informed participation by the public in the process of advancing sound coverage.
