Mission Statement

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) was founded in 1986. EPI’s mission is to inform people and empower them to seek solutions that will ensure broadly shared prosperity and opportunity. The Institute stresses real-world analysis and examines what is happening to real people. Our work strengthens democracy by providing people with tools to participate in the public discussion on the economy and stems from the core belief that such participation will result in economic policies that better reflect the public interest.

About This Cause

EPI conducts research and analysis examining the impact of economic trends to heighten awareness, and recommend policies to improve the economic well-being of low- and middle-income families in the United States. EPI is well known for its reports on issues ranging from job growth, wages, the gender pay gap and the safety net to health care coverage, job quality, and retirement security. We are unique because of our focus and extensive expertise on the full range of economic issues; effectiveness in dissemination and media outreach; extensive network of academic economists; and strong relationships with policymakers and membership/advocacy groups.
