Mission Statement

Blue Water Baltimore’s mission is to restore the quality of Baltimore’s rivers, streams and Harbor to foster a healthy environment, a strong economy, and thriving communities.

About This Cause

While water quality improvements are at the core of our mission, increasingly we have been investing in projects that also revitalize communities, engage youth, and connect citizens of diverse backgrounds while reducing pollution. Working throughout Baltimore City and a significant part of Baltimore County, Blue Water Baltimore serves a population of 1 million residents, 200 square miles, and 450 stream miles. This territory drains to the Patapsco and Back River watersheds, currently two of the most polluted rivers entering the Chesapeake Bay. The Baltimore region has high levels of impervious surfaces and old and crumbling infrastructure, two main contributors to sewage pollution and contaminated run-off to our waterways. There continues to be a significant need for the work of Blue Water Baltimore as we face many challenges in improving water quality, especially in the urban environment. Sewage and stormwater pollution continue to foul our local streams, pathways and streets during heavy rain fall. Our neighborhoods are still blighted by trash, illegal dumping, and large areas with no trees or open green space. To address these issues, Blue Water Baltimore conducts one of the most robust water quality monitoring programs in the State, land-based restoration activities, and educational programs that all ultimately impact the area’s water quality. These activities engage community residents and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Our programs bring a diverse set of people together to help restore clean water in Baltimore.
