Mission Statement

The Southern Environmental Law Center uses the power of the law to champion the environment of the Southeast. Our team of more than 80 dedicated attorneys stands up for all the things you love about this special region—clean water, healthy air, mountains and forests, the coast. The mission of the Southern Environmental Law Center is to protect the basic right to clean air, clean water, and a livable climate; to preserve our region’s natural treasures and rich biodiversity, and to provide a healthy environment for all.

About This Cause

We are the Southern Environmental Law Center — the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan environmental legal advocacy organization rooted in and focused on the South. As lawyers, policy and issue experts, and community advocates and partners, we take on the toughest challenges to protect our air, water, land, wildlife, and the people who live here. And we win. Our approach is based on local presence, place-based action, and a network of partners throughout Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. SELC has the expertise, the heft, and the staying power to go toe to toe with the biggest, most powerful companies and government agencies in the nation—and win. Many of our cases and initiatives play out over multiple years, across state lines, and in all three branches of government. Some of our proudest achievements include:  Retirement of well over half of the existing coal plant capacity in our region—and a corresponding 50 percent drop in CO2 levels from electric power sources in the South since 2005. Securing the excavation of 270 million tons of toxic coal ash from unlined, leaking pits on the banks of major rivers and lakes—the largest ever cleanup of industrial pollution in the South—and we are pressing to finish the job. Collaborating with partners to expand solar power installations and commitments in the South from 1,000 megawatts in 2015 to 29,000 megawatts by 2023. Leading a multi-faceted, collaborative campaign over six years that—through legislation, strategic communications, grassroots opposition, and six successful federal lawsuits—resulted in the 2020 cancelation of the 600-mile, $8-billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Spearheading successful campaigns across two federal administrations to keep offshore drilling out of the South Atlantic by securing anti-drilling resolutions from more than 200 coastal communities. We are now pressing Congress to enact a permanent ban. By successfully tackling complex environmental issues and powerful opponents in our region, SELC has consistently delivered nationally significant results and earned a reputation as one of the most effective nonprofits in the U.S.
