Mission Statement
Hospice of the Chesapeake's mission is to improve the quality of life for those in our communities experiencing advanced illness or bereavement through hospice and other palliative care, compassionate support and education. Hospice of the Chesapeake provides physical, psycho-social and spiritual support services to individuals living with and affected by advanced illness. These services are provided wherever the patient calls home. Hospice of the Chesapeake is committed to providing the best possible care for all regardless of their inability to pay. Using a team-oriented approach involving our physicians, nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains and counselors, allows us to ensure quality and compassionate care. Additionally, grief support services are available to all members of the community who have lost a loved one including community members who have experienced traumatic or sudden loss. When care at home is not possible, we can provide services at one of our care centers.

When care at home is not possible, we can provide services at one of our care centers. The Betty Jane and Creston G. Tate Chesapeake Hospice House, Anne Arundel County's first in-patient hospice facility, located in Linthicum, MD opened its doors in 1996. The Tate House provides a unique, home-like setting with private rooms for patients who cannot remain in their own homes because they live alone, have no one to help care for them or need additional care. In 2006, we opened our second house, The John and Arloine Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House, located in southern Anne Arundel County in Harwood, MD. In 2011, the Mandrin Hospice House elevated its level of care and has been officially renamed The John and Arloine Mandrin Inpatient Care Center. The new inpatient care center offers an alternative to a hospital admission and/or hospital stay for complex medical needs. Our team of professionals will assist patients and families to determine which level of care is most appropriate based on current prognosis, necessary medical requirements and placement availability. The Chesapeake Life Center at Hospice of the Chesapeake provides individual grief counseling and support groups for a variety of populations including adults who have lost a loved one, children and teens, and survivors of homicide and suicide. Through Chesapeake Life Center, we operate two weekend camps for grieving children and teens -- Camp Nabi and Phoenix Rising. The Chesapeake Life Center is unique in that we provide grief support services to anyone in the community seeking support including those who have experienced a traumatic or sudden loss. The scope of services far exceeds that which is provided for in the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Hospice of the Chesapeake is a fully licensed, independent, community-based non-profit organization certified by Medicare and the State of Maryland, and accredited by the Joint Commission. It is affiliated with the Hospice Alliance, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Hospice Network of Maryland. The Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations (MANO) sponsors the nationally renowned Standards for Excellence program. This program encourages and promotes ethical and accountable management and leadership in nonprofit organizations. The centerpiece for the program is the Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector, a model for how the most well managed and responsibly-governed nonprofits operate. There are more than 22,000 nonprofit organizations in Maryland – groups with the tax-exempt status under sections 501(c)(3) or 501(c)4 of the Internal Revenue Code. Of this number, less than 100 nonprofits are MANO certified. Hospice of the Chesapeake was first awarded this honor in October 2005 and was re-certified in December 2008 for successfully achieving the coveted Standards for Excellence. MANO representatives offered congratulations to Hospice of the Chesapeake for being “a true leader in your commitment to ethics and accountability in the nonprofit sector.”
