Mission Statement

The Washington Association of Black Journalists (WABJ) provides members with ongoing professional education opportunities to advance their careers in the media industry and advocates for increased diversity within the profession.

About This Cause

Founded in 1975, WABJ is an organization of more than 350 Black journalists, journalism educators, public relations professionals and student journalists in the Washington, D.C., metro area. WABJ, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, offers its members comprehensive year-round professional development programs and cutting-edge skills-based training. These include our annual Urban Journalism Workshop for local high school students, now in its 38th year. The organization actively hosts networking events, collaborates on an annual journalism job fair with local affinity groups, advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion at media companies across the region, and supports efforts to ensure accurate news coverage of issues impacting historically marginalized communities.
