Mission Statement
Georgetown Ministry Center seeks lasting solutions to homelessness, one person at a time.
About This Cause
Since 1987, Georgetown Ministry Center (GMC) guides service-resistant, chronically homeless individuals in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC towards stability and housing through aggressive street outreach, provision of a safe and welcoming environment where everyone is treated with respect, and advocacy for the homeless. GMC's goals are to engage all of the homeless individuals in our area by building trusting relationships; stabilize individuals by identifying and meeting their basic needs; and connect individuals to solution-oriented programs and services. GMC operates a drop-in day center that is open seven days a week, 365 days a year. Laundry and shower facilities are provided, as well as psychiatric and medical care, and case management to connect our guests to housing and treatment services. We offer programming that includes a knitting group, counseling/therapy group, weekly movies, and more. Nearly 1,000 individuals are served every year. Three times a week, GMC staff does street outreach with our medical doctor or psychiatrist to provide medical care and to build trust. Over 800 individuals have been contacted and given care through this program. Throughout the winter months, GMC partners with Georgetown University to administer a volunteer Hypothermia Outreach Team to do outreach on the coldest winter nights. The Team encourages people to seek shelter, distributes cold-weather accessories, and checks for signs and symptoms of hypothermia. GMC also partners with local churches to operate a nighttime winter shelter. From November to March, ten individuals receive food, shelter, counseling, and referral services that are designed to assist them to make the transition to alternate housing after the shelter closes. The shelter rotates bi-weekly among ten participating congregations, where over 750 volunteers prepare and serve dinner nightly and interact with shelter residents. In addition to our outreach and care programs, we educate the local community about homelessness and mental health. Our educational outreach includes students ranging from pre-k to college, community organizations, businesses, government officials, and more.
