About This Cause
The Children’s House at Johns Hopkins provides a home-away-from home for children and their families while they are receiving medical care for life-threatening illnesses. It is our purpose to keep families together in the midst of medical crisis to reduce stress, to promote self-help and mutual support. In addition, The Children’s House serves as a center for educational, supportive and therapeutic groups within the community. Since opening in January of 1993, The Children’s House has provided an average of 2,000 individual overnight accommodations for over three thousand children and families from every state in the U.S. and over seventy six countries. Approximately one third of our residents are from Maryland. The primary population is families of both inpatients and outpatients from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. All families are referred by a hospital professional, usually a social worker, doctor or nurse. This beautiful four-level house is fully equipped with private bedrooms and baths, as well as kitchens, a dining room, laundry facilities, a playroom, two TV rooms and a library. Families are guaranteed privacy and an affordable, comfortable place to stay for the duration of treatment. The Children’s House is a project of the Believe In Tomorrow National Children’s Foundation, who brought together 3,000 volunteers and 400 companies to plan, construct and furnish the facility. The Children’s House stands as a tribute to the enormous volunteer effort, which made the dream a reality. Today, the house runs smoothly thanks to hours of labor from a large number of volunteers. Volunteers are still an important part of the day-to-day operations within The Children’s House. Volunteers staff the reception desk area, help with house maintenance, plan activities for the children and families including: movie nights, arts and crafts, holiday parties and family suppers. In addition, volunteers are available to transport families in our Children’s House van. Besides serving children and their families, The Children’s House is also equipped to serve many local hospital and health care related support groups. The house has a large meeting room on the lower level where groups can meet on a regular basis outside of the hospital environment.
