Mission Statement

The mission of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance is to protect the land, water and wildlife found in the 1.1 million-acre Pinelands National Reserve.

About This Cause

The New Jersey Pinelands is home to the most extensive surviving forest on the Eastern Seaboard between Maine and Florida. The Pinelands is a region of 1.1 million acres defined by federal and state legislation enacted to protect the unique ecological values of the Pine Barrens ecosystem by controlling development on a regional basis. The Pinelands landscape consists of generally flat, sandy and acidic soils deposited over millions of years of rising and falling sea levels. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) is now in its 25th year of advocacy and public education for Pinelands’ ecological and historic resources. PPA was founded in 1989 to serve as an alliance of individuals and organizations interested in protecting the Pine Barrens ecosystem and advancing the innovative regional land use protections embodied in the Pinelands Protection Act and Comprehensive Management Plan. PPA has a staff of 15 full time and 3 part time employees, a Board of 23 scientists, lawyers, philanthropists and citizen activists, a large body of volunteers, and a membership of over 4,000 households and organizations. PPA staff have developed unique expertise in Pinelands conservation and regulations. PPA's primary strategies are four-fold: First, we monitor and advocate before the Pinelands Commission, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, local government, courts, and state legislature. Second, we build grassroots support for conservation and help citizens add their voices to the debates over conservation and preservation. Third, PPA educates. Our staff and volunteers provide dozens of presentations, workshops and panel discussions each year, conduct field trips for the public and school groups, and hold intensive teacher-training programs to help educators incorporate the Pinelands into their teaching. Finally, we support and assist efforts by land trusts and government conservation agencies to acquire land in the Pinelands for permanent preservation. In addition to this work, the Alliance has two initiatives: Pinelands Adventures, an outdoor recreation program aimed at fostering public understanding of and devotion to the Pinelands and Rancocas Creek Farm a sustainable, chemical-free farm connected to our mission to protect the Pinelands. We are dedicated to furthering justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our staff and our work. Everyone should have access to recreation, clean air and water and the scenic beauty the Pinelands provides.
