Mission Statement

EIA’s mission is to protect the environment by exposing environmental crimes and campaigning for the protection of the natural world via progressive policy-making, improved law enforcement, and behavior change. EIA uses innovative techniques including investigations, data analysis, and cutting-edge communications to create positive, lasting change to address the biggest global environmental challenges of our time. EIA empowers Indigenous and local communities’ abilities to expose environmental crime, defend their land, and increase protection for climate and biodiversity.

About This Cause

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) uses undercover investigations, intelligence gathering, and data analysis to expose environmental crime and drive systemic change. Since 1989, EIA has been at the forefront of protecting forests, wildlife, and the climate through bold advocacy, policy reform, and strategic partnerships with local and Indigenous communities. From helping secure the global ban on elephant ivory to advancing the world’s first ban on illegal timber imports under the U.S. Lacey Act, EIA’s track record demonstrates the power of evidence-based activism. What makes EIA unique is its ability to act swiftly and effectively where others can’t. We don’t just uncover crimes—we trigger real-world consequences. Our investigations have led to the phaseout of ozone-destroying chemicals, halted illegal deforestation in the Amazon, and helped protect some of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems. With a rare combination of fieldwork, legal expertise, public pressure, and global diplomacy, EIA is a catalyst for lasting environmental change.
