MMEG provides grants to exceptional women from developing countries to further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the wellbeing of women and children worldwide.
About This Cause
Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a volunteer-led public charity, that awards education grants to exceptional women from developing countries. MMEG was founded in 1981 as a World Bank Family Network program to honor Margaret McNamara’s life-long commitment to education and gender equality by supporting university-led education for women from developing countries. Grantees are at least 25 years old and enrolled at accredited universities in the United States and Canada and select universities in South Africa and Latin America, including the FLACSO network. To date, MMEG has awarded 465 grants to women from more than 75 countries and disbursed about $4.2 million in grants. MMEG grantees are academically - talented and inspirational problem-solvers, with demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of women and children in developing countries. Grant recipients are selected annually from backgrounds as varied as social justice, medicine, agriculture, engineering, and education. Dedicated volunteers manage our four university-level funding programs, including a local program at Trinity Washington University. By supporting talented women to further their education, MMEG is investing in their economic empowerment, confident in their capacity to create transformational change in their communities both professionally and by serving as role models, mentors, and leaders. MMEG grants are primarily funded by many individual donors, as well as small family foundations and some corporate donors; all consider these donations to be investments in the future of women in developing countries.
