Mission Statement

To improve the lives of women and children by supporting the higher education of exceptional women from developing countries who will catalyze change.

About This Cause

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a non-profit, volunteer-run public charity committed to empowering women through education. We believe investing in women’s education is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth. Our mission is to improve the lives of women and children by supporting the higher education of exceptional women from developing countries who will catalyze change. We invest in one woman at a time, women whose work has a ripple effect on many other women and children. Since its inception in 1981, MMEG has awarded education grants to 562 women from 79 countries, totaling $5.1 million. Last year, we awarded 31 grants amounting to $277,500. MMEG now runs five regional programs, reaching an increasingly diverse group of women. Candidates must be at least 25 years old, enrolled at a university in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Latin America, or France, and close to completing their degree. Use of the MMEG grant funds is not restricted. This means a woman can use it to travel for her PhD research, pay for child care, or replace a computer that has crashed months before her thesis is due. We help women who have proven they are exceptional get across the finish line and out in the world, making change. All applicants undergo a rigorous selection process by a team of diverse and well qualified volunteers. Reviewers assess applicants’ demonstrated commitment to improve the lives of women and/or children in developing countries, their potential impact, and their extracurricular record. Many grantees have founded nonprofits and have begun changing lives even as they are completing their studies. MMEG grantees come from 79 different countries. They are educators and fetal nutritionists, audiologists and microbiologists, mathematicians and public policy experts. They work on last mile health in Liberia; peace education in Bosnia and Herzegovina; girls’ education in India; and aquaculture in Nigeria. The one thing they have in common is that they are making the world better for women and children. MMEG’s impact, by helping each of these women get across the finish line, is broad geographically, vast in its variety, and inspiring in its reach.
