Mission Statement

Through strategic litigation, training, communication, and outreach, the Institute for Justice advances a rule of law under which individuals can control their destinies as free and responsible members of society. IJ litigates to secure economic liberty, school choice, private property rights, freedom of speech, and other vital individual liberties and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. In addition, IJ trains law students, lawyers, and activists in the tactics of public interest litigation. Through these activities, IJ illustrates and extends the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government.

About This Cause

The Institute for Justice is a nonprofit, public interest law firm. Our mission is to end widespread abuses of government power and secure the constitutional rights that allow all Americans to pursue their dreams. IJ combines cutting-edge litigation, sophisticated media relations, strategic research, boots-on-the-ground advocacy and much more to fight on behalf of those individuals who are denied their most important rights. Despite the challenge of taking on powerful government officials and entrenched precedents, we win three out of every four cases we file. IJ has litigated more than 300 cases on behalf of more than 1,000 clients. This includes 10 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, with seven victories. Additionally, since our founding in 1991, the Institute for Justice has been an excellent steward of the resources entrusted to us by donors across the nation. That is why IJ has earned Charity Navigator's top 4-star rating every year since 2001, which puts the us in the highest one percentile of the more than 9,000 nonprofits ranked each year by Charity Navigator.
