Mission Statement

Empowering children through books and reading. For almost 30 years, EWDC has harnessed the power of reading to help kids thrive at school and in life. Through books, we support students’ academic and social-emotional development, expand their horizons, and foster a love of reading and learning. But that’s not all. By creating opportunities for kids to read, we’re connecting volunteers with their communities, providing schools with needed resources, and promoting empathy, understanding, and inclusion. Through reading with EWDC, everybody wins.

About This Cause

In 1995, Everybody Wins DC (EWDC) launched based on a simple, yet extremely powerful, belief: if you give a child the chance to read or be read to, you can change that child’s life for the better. Today, EWDC’s programs continue to embody this belief by creating joyful reading experiences for children to share with mentors, role models, siblings, and more. Through these reading moments, students gain critical literacy skills, develop social-emotional tools, learn about new ideas and opportunities, and nurture a life-long love of the written word. These are the building blocks for success in the classroom, in the community, and beyond. EWDC started as a partnership with the U.S. Senate to bring a reading-based mentoring program to a public elementary school on Capitol Hill. EWDC now partners with more than 100 organizations to deliver three reading programs to more than a thousand students each school year. Power Readers: Power Readers is EWDC’s signature program, combining the power of reading with the power of mentorship. The program connects volunteers from the community with students in need to read together for one hour a week. No lesson plans, no curriculum. Just quality time spent together over a book. Students are recommended to the program by teachers, social workers, and school administrators, but participation is 100% voluntary. Students choose to join the program, which helps foster a strong relationship with their mentors and make the reading sessions more enjoyable. As a result, students build connections that help develop literacy skills, support social-emotional development, and instill a love of reading and learning. StoryTime: StoryTime, EWDC’s read aloud program, brings together small groups of students to connect with special guests over a book and guided discussion. These reading experiences help open students' minds to new ideas and opportunities while reinforcing core literacy skills. Guest readers include business leaders, elected officials, scientists, athletes, authors, and more. The Book Project: The Book Project expands opportunities for reading by distributing free books and resources to children, schools, and community partners. In addition, The Book Project is focused on increasing access to books that celebrate diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives so that all children get the opportunity to see themselves reflected on the pages they read.
