Mission Statement

Smith Center is a nonprofit health, education, and arts organization in Washington DC. Our mission is to develop and promote healing practices that explore physical, emotional, and mental resources that lead to life-affirming changes for people affected by cancer.

About This Cause

Founded in 1996, Smith Center for Healing and the Arts (formerly Smith Farm) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit health, education, and arts organization. Our major focuses include: Cancer Programs: We offer empowering retreats and programs for adults living with cancer and their caregivers including yoga and stress reduction, creative expression, nutrition classes, as well as lectures and support programs. Patient Navigation: Through the Institute of Integrative Oncology Navigation, we offer innovative national and local patient navigation trainings and contribute to the developing dialogue about patient care nationwide. Arts & Healing: Smith Center has become a leader in the nationwide movement to promote the use of the arts in healing. We do this through programs and exhibitions at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery and by developing and sharing a range of innovative programs and initiatives in the community and across the nation. Our Philosophy on Healing Healing is a natural and often deeply personal process that can encompass the entire spectrum of our lives – physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual. For some it is a return to wholeness or a return of hope – to others it is a sense that “I will be all right, no matter what happens.” It can be a return of a long lost sense of joy in life or a renewed sense of purpose despite difficult circumstances. For others a new or renewed sense of belonging in the world, or of a sense that somehow everything makes sense. There is an important dialogue that is taking place in contemporary biomedicine about the distinction between curing and healing. We want both. Curing is successful medical treatment. It is what the physician hopes to bring to the patient. Healing is broader, and comes from within. It is the inner process through which a person becomes whole. Curing affects the illness, while healing affects the experience of the illness. A person engaged in healing work can make a significant transformation in their quality of life. And that itself can sometimes have a positive affect on outcome. Our work at Smith Center is to help ‘create the conditions for healing’ through support, community, and providing tools and techniques that promote healing. We believe that everyone harbors innate capacities for healing. We believe that healing is always possible even when curing is not. Community Need Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, with a projected 1,900,000 new cancer cases and 608,570 cancer deaths projected to occur in the United States in 2021. Washington, DC has the eighth highest cancer rate in the country and the highest death rate from breast cancer. It is currently estimated that over 20,000 residents live with cancer in DC alone, with approximately 3,450 new cases projected to be diagnosed in 2021 (ACS, 2021 Facts and Figures). Those living with cancer frequently suffer from physical and psychological repercussions during and after treatment. Diagnosis can trigger deep emotional distress, exhausting and life-threatening treatments can lead to permanent physical disabilities and the costly yet needed therapies can threaten financial stability. Additionally, the psychological effects of cancer often extend to family members and caregivers, who experience fear at the prospect of losing their loved one. As the only independent, non-profit organization providing holistic, innovative health services in D.C., Smith Center is widely recognized for meeting the unique needs of those living with cancer. Our 26-year history of providing support and expanding programs reflects our capacity to provide value to cancer survivors, their loved ones, and the broader community. In addition, our collaborations with multiple cancer treatment centers and hospitals, including Inova Schar Cancer Institute (ISCI) Fairfax, Fair Oaks and Alexandria, Medstar Washington Cancer Institute, Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, are further testament to our unique contribution to complementary care available in the greater D.C. area, and our ability to partnering the community effectively. Our goal is to support the people we serve in taking their next healing step, whatever that may be. We encourage healing by expanding access to and knowledge of integrative and complementary medicine practices, including but not limited to psychosocial support, creativity, stress reduction, nutrition, and patient navigation for individuals living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis.
