Mission Statement
Little Lights seeks to increase the opportunity available to students, youth, and adults living in three public housing communities in Washington, DC, employing a personal, relational approach coupled with a focus on structural community development.
About This Cause
Little Lights empowers residents of three public housing communities in Washington, DC. Using a holistic approach that incorporates personal, relational support in addition to structural community development, Little Lights aims to increase the opportunity available to students, youth, and adults living in DC's under-resourced neighborhoods. For students Little Lights provides intensive homework help and tutoring programs. With no more than a 3-to-1 student-to-tutor ratio, students are guaranteed individualized academic help. At Little Lights they will also find a host of wraparound services, from mentoring to choir to a Saturday drop-in program. Youth and adults in these communities struggle to raise families on roughly $14,000 each year. To come alongside families in that situation, Little Lights provides an on-site Family Center that supplies free diapers, clothing, and job search assistance. For the past six years Little Lights has also developed a landscaping social enterprise, the Clean Green Team, which employs 6-8 men and teaches them the ins and outs of running a landscaping business.
