Mission Statement
The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County, Inc. strives to build the capacity of individuals and organizations to improve the health and quality of life in Carroll County, Maryland.
About This Cause
The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County was founded nearly 25 years ago by leaders of the Carroll County Health Department and Carroll Hospital. The first task the Partnership was given was to assess the health needs of the community and identify what the citizens felt was the top priorities for healthcare. After the passage of the Affordable Care Act, The Partnership did these Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) every 3 years, in compliance with the law. From the priorities set from the CHNA, The Partnership and their approximately 150 community partners made up of state and local agency representatives, healthcare and wellness providers and Carroll citizens implement activities and educational programs to improve the lives and health of our citizens. Some of our activities and programs include Worksite Wellness that provides health education that include recommendations for a healthy diet, exercise and relaxation and mindfulness activities to help with mental health. To encourage physical activities, The Partnership sponsors and participates in an activity called Walk in the Park that encourages our citizens to come join us to walk in the many incredibly beautiful parks we have in Carroll County. From late spring through early fall we partner with Carroll County Recreation and Parks to have a program called Paddle with the Partnership that brings our neighbors to a local park to paddle kayaks around the incredible lake. We have a program called No Body's perfect to help high school and middle school students have a better and more accurate body image through a half day seminar with speakers that discuss healthy eating and expose how the media distorts what a healthy body looks like. The Partnership also sponsors the annual flu shot clinics at the local senior center and participates in the Bureau of Aging's Seniors on the Go, a one day and and information fair for Carroll's aging population. Recognizing the higher than the national average of persons who have melanoma , The Partnership does an educational program at the local pools and parks called Fun in the Sun. This program educates on how to safely enjoy the sun while protecting your skin. We distribute sunscreen and hats to encourage participation. The sister program to Fun in the Sun is Safer in the Shade. With this program we plant trees on public land To gather input and ideas from the community and our partners we have three leadership times that include, Healthy Aging, Access to Care and Advancing Health and Wellness. These groups meet bi-monthly and offer information and ideas to make our programs better.
