Mission Statement
To heal and empower youth, families, and communities through the performing arts.
About This Cause
WombWork Productions, Inc. was founded by three dynamic visionary artists in 1997. It is a fully comprehensive production company that preserves and re-empowers youth, families, and communities through the theatrical arts, music, dance, theatre, and art instruction. Productions allow the participants to create for both themselves and the audience a mirror in which to view themselves and reflect upon their decisions and virtues. This allows them to analyze their own conditions and make better life choices that will enable them to rise to their highest potential. Currently, there are three theatre companies comprised of the youth Next Generation Art Ensemble, young adult Nu Generation Art Ensemble, and adult Nu World Art Ensemble who all meet at the WombWork BlackBox Theatre once-per-week. WombWork Productions, Inc. has focused on uplifting those who have historically struggled in Baltimore City. The directors, board, and staff members understand the institutional systems in which WombWork Productions, Inc. operates. This results in initiatives that focus resources and efforts on those with the least. Much of WombWork Productions, Inc.’s performances and art instruction revolve around social change theatre that addresses racial inequity for audience members. Many of the performances bring up issues concerning systemic racism including school-to-prison pipelines, police brutality, sexual assault, mental health, sense of self, and black identity. The inspiration from these stories come from the members of the art ensemble who have experienced these issues firsthand lend their voices to these presented stories. WombWork Productions, Inc. works in several schools and under-served communities throughout the Baltimore area. These in-school and after-school programs involve teaching artists empowering these students to tap into skills that they did not know they possessed.
