Mission Statement

NTI is a nonpartisan, nonprofit global security organization focused on reducing nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity.

About This Cause

NTI protects lives, the environment, and our quality of life now and for future generations. Every day, we work to transform global security by driving systemic solutions to nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity. NTI has a unique operating model. We generate novel ideas to close dangerous security gaps, galvanize global engagement around our issues, demonstrate and de-risk new ways to reduce threats, and ultimately scale and sustain impact through institutional adoption of our innovative solutions. Founded in 2001 by former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and CNN founder Ted Turner, NTI is guided by a prestigious, international board of directors. Through our projects, NTI has guided global leaders in developing important policies and priorities to reduce the risks posed by poorly secured nuclear materials; catalyzed efforts, with Warren Buffett's funding and support, to reduce the proliferation of nuclear technology with the development of a low-enriched uranium bank; created the Vienna-based best-practices organizations, the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS); helped create a vibrant nuclear security network of global political leaders in Europe, Latin America and the Asia/Pacific regions; helped create a global disease surveillance network that connects regional disease surveillance networks in the Middle East, Southern Africa and Southeast Asia; and much more. Former International Atomic Energy Agency Director Mohamed ElBaradei calls NTI a "role model of public-private partnership in issues of security and of survival." We are entirely dependent on and grateful for the generosity of our donors. Without them, our innovative and groundbreaking work would not be possible. NTI's operating model is unique, our track record is unparalleled in the field, and our credibility is our hallmark. That's why forward-thinking philanthropists, prestigious foundations and concerned citizens alike invest in our work. NTI welcomes substantive engagement with our supporters, but funders do not determine our research findings, insights or recommendations or interfere in any way with our independence.
