Mission Statement

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue is a volunteer-based, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of homeless animals in the Maryland-Washington, DC-Virginia metropolitan area. Our mission is to find permanent loving homes for adoptable animals placed in our care; to provide a safe haven and rehabilitation to feral, neglected and abused animals; and to put an end to the euthanasia of healthy animals because of pet overpopulation.

About This Cause

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue is an all volunteer, 501(c)3 no-kill organization dedicated to the rescue, care and adoption of homeless animals in the Maryland and Washington DC area. Rude Ranch Animal Rescue, Inc. is a public non-profit corporation established in 2001 with an original mission to provide a refuge to abandoned, abused and homeless animals. The focus was to bring in special needs animals from local animal controls and traditional shelters and find new permanent homes for them. Throughout the years, Rude Ranch forged partnerships with over 40 animal control agencies and high-kill animal shelters, allowing these agencies to lower euthanasia rates in the area. In the past 19 years Rude Ranch found homes for more than 5,000 animals and facilitated the veterinary care and placement for more than 10,000 additional animals. In October, 2012 Rude Ranch opened the Spay Spa & Neuter Nook regional a high quality, low cost spay/neuter clinic, centrally located in Davidsonville, MD. This clinic was designed to be a high volume spay and neuter clinic focused only on spay & neuter. In July of 2015, the clinic was expanded to over 5,000 square feet. This expansion immediately yielded additional capacity to perform up to 10,000 sterilizations per year. The clinic has the ability to expand to as many as 20,000 surgeries per year (With additional staffing). On average the clinic performs 1,500-2,000 spay/neuter surgeries per quarter. The clinic has provided almost 50,000 spay & neuter surgeries since opening in October, 2012. The Spay Spa & Neuter Nook is affiliated with the Humane Alliance and is an NSNRT (National Spay/Neuter Response Team) clinic. Since opening in 2012, Rude Ranch and the Spay Spa & Neuter Nook has helped lower the state wide euthanasia rate by almost 6%. Likewise, our county (Anne Arundel, MD) animal control has not euthanized a healthy adoptable cat or dog for the last three years. Unfortunately there was still one group of animals that has been vastly undeserved in our county: feral/community cats. It is estimated that there are 81,896 community and feral cats in Anne Arundel County, MD (PetSmart Charities Feral Population Estimator Tool). Traditionally, the county's method of controlling the feral cat population was to have a resident bring the cat in to be euthanized. (In 2017 the euthanasia rate of healthy community cats was almost 100%.) This population control method did not work for several reasons: the people that cared about the cats did not want to see them killed and most people did not want to keep running an animal to animal control on a daily basis. As a result, the population continued to grow. In January, 2018, the Community Cat Bill passed in Anne Arundel County. This bill clearly described the legal rights of citizens practicing TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) regarding community cats in Anne Arundel County. The bill also states the county's animal control agency does not have to impound a community cat and can put it through a TNR program and return it instead. The SAVECats (Spay And Vaccinate Every Cat) program was created as a result of this legislation. The goal of the SAVECats program is to provide spay/neuter/TNR services to community cats in Anne Arundel County, MD and the people that care for them. SAVECats offiicially launched in July, 2018. In the first 18 months, the program facilitated the spay/neuter over 2,500 feral/free roaming and community cats in Anne Arundel County. Correspondingly, as the number of cats under the SAVECats program has grown the intake and euthanasia of healthy feral and community cats has gone down 55% during the same timeframe. In our twenty years of service, our mission has expanded from providing refuge and care to needy animals to including to help control, save, and serve the pet population in Anne Arundel County.
