About This Cause

The Leapfrog Group is a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit founded in 2000, with the mission of "giant leaps forward in safety and quality of U.S. health care." Leapfrog rates hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, using data collected voluntarily through a survey of facilities. For each topic in its surveys, Leapfrog relies on expert panels of the foremost research leaders, as well as faculty support from Johns Hopkins Medicine, to review studies and develop questions that are aligned with best practices for measuring quality and safety. As an independent nonprofit arbiter of health care safety and quality data, Leapfrog reports all performance, good and bad. Consumers and purchasers of health care have a right to know the safety, quality, efficiency, and value of health care to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Survey is the nation's gold standard in assessing hospital safety, quality, and efficiency based on national performance measures that are of specific interest to health care purchasers and consumers. Survey results are publicly reported and provide hospitals with information to benchmark their progress in improving the care they deliver. The hospital survey collects and publicly reports safety, quality, and value data on more than 2,000 hospitals, and in 2020 Leapfrog began surveying ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are assigned to over 2,600 general acute-care hospitals across the nation twice annually. The safety grade is becoming the gold standard measure of patient safety, cited in MSNBC, The New York Times, and AARP The Magazine. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 28 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital's overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade methodology has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety. The Safety Grade is presented in a consumer-friendly A, B, C, D, and F letter grade system and is fully transparent to the public to help consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. This reputation for research integrity and effectiveness is a significant reason why Newsweek Magazine, in February 2020 selected Leapfrog as the exclusive partner for its new health care rating initiative. Leapfrog will identify top providers in a variety of categories to be named by Newsweek for their excellence as Leapfrog's proven method of calling for transparency and public reporting continues to drive health care improvements. Raising consciousness arms stakeholders and consumers with knowledge and information to secure the appropriate health care for their family.
